If you’ve watched many of the videos on WeekendFarmer.com by now you probably realize that we abide by organic growing principles. That’s our choice. We’ve decided to grow organically because we don’t want to introduce chemicals like herbicides and pesticides into our food supply, but there is also an economic reason.
Let’s imagine for a second that you have a lot of weeding to do one weekend and you don’t want to spend the weekend on your hands and knees pulling weeds. So you go down to your big box store and the first thing you see is a big two gallon jug of herbicide. That purchase will cost you around $20. You’ll bring it home, spray it your weeds and they will die. It will work effectively.
Now, if you decided to walk a little further down the aisle and instead picked up a two gallon jug of vinegar, it will cost you about $4. Put this in a spray bottle, spray it on your weeds and it will just as effectively kill your weeds. And now, you’ve saved $16 each purchase.
So while not everyone can agree on the reasoning behind growing organically, namely to avoid the chemicals added to our food supply and the harmful affect on beneficial insects, we can all see eye-to-eye on the economic reasons to use this cheap and easy method to get rid of weeds.
